Some stories remind us exactly why we do what we do.When Max (formerly McKensie) arrived at the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach, he was scared and overwhelmed. Found alone in a parking lot, the shelter environment was simply too much for him. He spent most of his time curled up in the corner of his kennel, trembling. His happiest moments were the quiet ones… when someone would sit beside him, letting him snuggle close and feel safe.
Then Trish and John came along. What started as a foster quickly became forever, and Max found exactly what he needed: patience, understanding, and unconditional love.
With time, encouragement, and plenty of positive experiences, Max slowly began to realize the world wasn’t such a scary place after all. His best dog buddy, Cooper, became his trusted sidekick, helping build his confidence one adventure at a time.
Not long after, Gabby joined the family. Gabby came to us in heartbreaking condition, arriving extremely ill and in desperate need of care. Thanks to the dedication of our staff and veterinary team, she recovered and got the second chance she deserved. Today, her happy-go-lucky personality perfectly balances Max’s gentle, shy spirit.
Together, they’re unstoppable. From racing down the beach (their favorite place!), swimming, hiking, exploring pet-friendly stores, and making new canine friends, Max and Gabby are living the lives every dog deserves. Max has even come so far that he’s helped another shy shelter dog gain confidence and discover the joy of play.
