2019, Girlie was 9 years old when she found her way into the home of one of our volunteers, Shelley. Seven years later, at the age of 16, Girlie passed away, leaving behind a life that was filled with love, comfort, and someone who understood exactly who she was.
Shelley says adopting an adult cat comes with one important realization: they already have a pretty firm worldview about how things are supposed to work. Fortunately, Girlie found Shelley to be trainable, and the two negotiated their new life together one day at a time.
Girlie was sweet and lovable, but very much on her terms. She wasn’t particularly interested in being picked up or cuddled. But as the years passed, something changed. Girlie became her own version of a Velcro kitty. When it was cold, she slept on Shelley in the recliner. When it was hot, she slept beside her, touching her. And every night, she curled up beside Shelley’s head, trying to purr her to sleep.
“I really miss that purr,” Shelley says. We know that Girlie’s seven years with Shelley were filled with the very best things — a safe home, a person who respected her boundaries, endless love, and the freedom to be exactly who she was. And while seven years can never feel like enough, we are so grateful that Girlie got to spend her golden years knowing she was home.
